2024
president’s
report

Celebrating the momentum of our strategic priorities.

I am pleased to present the inaugural President’s Report, celebrating the momentum of our institutional strategic priorities and achievements during the 2023-24 academic year. As a university, we are at the midpoint of implementing our Strategic Action Plan and beginning to realize the shared vision designed by hundreds of faculty, staff, students, trustees, and boards of advisors to launch the next chapter of Roger Williams University.

This report demonstrates the dynamic, real-world education and opportunity to design powerful combinations of academics, work experience, and experiences that RWU offers our students, preparing them to become the changemakers and leaders the world needs.

It has been a pleasure being president of this great institution. I have always expressed that Roger Williams University has all the right ingredients, and our Strategic Action Plan has helped us build upon our academic excellence, world-class faculty, and caring staff to channel our efforts toward putting our students at the center. With an iterative planning process, continual reflection and assessment, and drive to put plans into action, we are creating an even greater future together in service to our students, our region, and the world.

Sincerely,

President Ioannis N. Miaoulis signature

Giving Back to Our Local Community

Each year, RWU students, faculty, and staff donate personally crafted baskets to the annual Turkey Basket Drive, providing the fixings for Thanksgiving meals and personal care needs to our neighbors through the East Bay Food Pantry. Since 2014, the drive has collected food and gift cards totaling over $33,000.

RWU Seeks to Improve Bronze Rating in Sustainability

Following RWU’s STARS Bronze rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, the RWU Sustainability Committee is preparing for the university’s next submission to the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) this fall. Thanks to our first-ever rating received in January 2023, we are identifying numerous areas where we can and have made progress on sustainability initiatives over the last two years since the first audit was completed.

After Roger Williams: Graduates Soar High

As they celebrated earning their degrees at the 2024 Commencement ceremony, our graduates shared the educational experiences that have prepared them to soar higher and what’s next after graduation.

“At RWU, I had the opportunity to participate in different student competitions as well as faculty-led research. I really enjoyed having the opportunity to have professional experience through the competitions while also meeting a lot of different people going to conferences. It helped me learn so much from the many different sides of construction.”

“Joining the Molecular Longevity Laboratory under Dr. Chris Burtner put me in a good spot to succeed. My mentor, Dr. Hum Nath Bhandari in the Mathematics Department, helped set me up to complete a great project. The one-on-one experience I had with them was a unique opportunity. I had the opportunity to work on a project by myself but still had help whenever I needed it – it was fantastic.”

“The faculty and staff at RWU Law really care about the students and make sure that we have all the resources that we need. I have been able to meet so many attorneys and judges. It’s been easy to make connections that will have a lasting impact on my career.”

“I was a member of the Women’s Volleyball team for four years and captain during my senior year. It can be difficult to manage academics and athletics, but my coaches and professors were very understanding of the student-athlete experience. Playing a sport is really fun, and it’s a great way to get out of the classroom and represent your school.”

“I had a fantastic experience at RWU. One of the selling points of the MBA program was an opportunity to go abroad to Greece for 10 days where we engaged in a crisis management course with Greek Organizations. The entire MBA program was great, and I knew when applying for jobs that having the MBA next to my name would be a big plus.”

“My advice to incoming students is to explore and try everything that you can, especially your first year. The most impactful part of my RWU experience was being involved, which allowed me to go to conferences and do research. I also did an internship in the Dominican Republic. All of my experiences shaped the person I am today.”
